Referral Traffic

If traffic on a website is gained through a site outside of a search engine it is known as referral traffic. An example of this would be a hyperlink from one page to another or a link on social media. The place where the traffic is gained from is known as a ‘referrer’ and can be tracked using Google Analytics.

Direct Traffic

Getting onto a website by typing the URL into the search bar is called direct traffic. This is when no referral site is used to send someone from one site to another and often comes about when people have things booked marked or know the website they are searching for. Generally, it is the least wanted traffic in internet marketing.
