The beginners guide to internet marketing

For the regular readers, this article may seem like a step backwards rather than forwards, as we’ve decided to go back to basics for the internet marketing beginners.

Internet marketing itself is such a broad category that trying to describe and define all of it would be like trying to describe the whole of computing; time consuming and confusing. Often you will hear the terms digital marketing and internet marketing used interchangeably (see our last blog post). However, internet marketing is simply the act of making money online using various different techniques.

Although it sounds complicated, it is actually much simpler that you think. In fact, even President Obama used internet marketing via email in order to encourage his supporters to vote for him.

There are many different components that are inputted into and ultimately make up internet marketing; SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), PPC (Pay-Per-Click) and SMM (Social Media Marketing). Each of these components, plus many others, help make up internet marketing and can each be used to an advantage.

SEO is the process of making a website rank higher in search engines above other websites. With SEO, a site is optimized to target keywords and draw more traffic for clients.

PPC is exactly what it says on the tin; you place a bid on a certain keyword that you would like your ad to display for and if someone clicks on it, you are charged. There are similar ads such as pay-per-impression (seeing the ad) or actions (like or comment). PPC campaigns are generally expensive but when done correctly, are beneficial.

Finally, the use of social media has practically exploded within the past five years. Since the introduction of smartphones, many people use social media on the move. SMM is a great way to engage a large number of people. In fact, you can even narrow down your demographic in terms of gender, age and interests, which makes it a revolutionary form of internet marketing.

These three components are just the tip of the iceberg. Although it may seem complicated to the beginners, if you keep up to date with our internet marketing blog posts, you’ll be an expert in no time!
